Jekyll and Hyde

A gothic thriller musical set in 19th century London about the ambitious chemist Henry Jekyll who's mission of separating good from evil within the human soul results in tragedy.

His Work and Nothing More

The song "His Work and Nothing More" is set near the middle of the musical when the experiment have clearly impacted Henry and the people around him for the worse. Henry struggles with his very literal inner demon while his best friend John is reasonably concerned about Henry's current state. Meanwhile Henry's wealthy future wife and father-in-law hope for his recovery and success.

The overlapping voice lines at the latter end of the song makes it an interesting challenge to choose what scenes should be shown at the expense of others. To round out the cast near the fire at the end I also added others who care for Henry from the book - Henry's loyal butler "Poole", and his science rival and foil "Lanyon".

I also hoped to portray Lisa's and her father's relationship. Sir Danvers filled with concern and exasperation on the topic of Henry Jekyll, which pushes him to action. And Lisa, resolute but not naively so of her situation.

Jekyll is often depicted as a heroic, confident figure in the majority of musical renditions. I hoped to create a different Jekyll, one who is on the withdrawn and soft-spoken side, but when filled with enough conviction is willing to "go where no angel would go".
